DA YI 612 Shift 6X12 Large Format Camera

Haven’t you always wanted to get into large format photography? I know I have. I’ve spent almost 20 years doing what most people, in any serious sort of sense, would call “photography”, and I spent a fair number of years before that just taking pictures — and, although I’ve always wanted to, never once, in all that time, have I ever clicked the shutter release on any large format camera. But, man! If I had a nickel for every time over the past couple of decades that I gave somewhat serious consideration to scooping up and old, used large format camera and trying my hand at it… well… I wouldn’t be a rich man, or anything, but I would, none the less, be the proud owner of a reasonably impressive pile of nickels!
Anyway… look at this beast in the picture! That thing just looks mean! Yeah, it’s going for $900.00, (that includes the camera and back, but not the lens, apparently) and yeah, that’s a good chunk of change, and yeah, this economy sucks large and you’re likely to be short on cash at the moment, but I mean LOOK at that thing! I don’t know, man… I think it might be the built in bubble-levels or something that are seriously tickling my Gear-Head. The thing just looks like it has attitude to me. I want to own it!
There’s a discussion about the Dayi 612 film back going on here.
Apparently, from that thread, we learn that this is a “Shen Hao Day Yi” camera and that the full English translation of the manufacturer’s name is (as it’s printed on the actual camera back): “Shanghai Great Art Professional camera company limited.” Which, I hear, has a fairly solid reputation for manufacturing photo equipment that regularly exceeds the average build quality of photo gear offered by two of their main competitors “Lucky Best Camera”, and “Gorgeous Pretty Beauty Camera.”
From the seller: “Dayi made 612S camera with shift function and interchangeable film back, interchangeable lens adapters and ground glass, come with a helicoid focusing mount .The camera can shift up 20mm. It is very useful funtion[sic] for shoting[sic] architecture or building, it also can shift down 20mm with the tripod adapter supplied. This auction included [I think he means “includes”] a 58mm or 65mm lens mount, fixed finder, removable film back, focusing hood with ground glass, cable realeased[sic]. The camera is well designed and precisely hand-made to obtain a super performance but less trouble making. It is also very friendly to use. This auction not including:Lens. If you choose the 75mm adapter, you must pay more USD15 If you choose the 90mm adapter, you must pay more USD25 If you choose the 105mm or 110mm or 120mm or 135mm or 150mm or 180mm adapter, you must pay more USD50″
Also, please note that while the seller refers to this in his listing as an “auction”, it actually appears to be no such thing. It looks as though this camera is only available through eBay’s “Buy it now” function. The item, nonetheless, is available for viewing at this location.
